Layers of Lighting: Peter's Career in Lighting Design

Lighting plays a very big part in transporting you to that space in your mind before it exists.

In collaboration with
Work.Life

For over 30 years, Peter Veale has been crafting the invisible elements that define our experience of a building. As a lighting consultant, his work spans an impressive global portfolio, from luxury resorts and Michelin-starred restaurants to private residences and corporate headquarters.

His journey into this specialised field began during his product design studies, where a university competition and a final-year project involving a light fitting set him on a path that would take him from Hong Kong to San Francisco and London.

Reclaiming the Craft

After spending 22 years as a director in a successful studio, Peter reached a turning point that led him to launch his own business, Layers of Light. A moment of "Friday pressure" on a project reminded him of why he entered the profession: the joy of using the creative side of his brain. By scaling down to more local, personal projects, Peter has reclaimed a hands-on approach.

Light, Smell, and Taste

Peter's philosophy extends beyond mere illumination. He is fascinated by how lighting affects the human brain and our sensory experiences. His research explores the intersection of light, smell, and taste—aiming to evoke specific emotional connections, whether the deep relaxation required in a spa or the vibrant energy of a restaurant.

Advice for the Crossroads

For those navigating their own career crossroads or starting a business, Peter's advice is rooted in connection: ask questions, understand your value, and never eat alone. Networking and listening to a client's needs are far more important than the hard sell. As a final pro tip for any space: uplighting for comfort, and a brisk walk after lunch for natural blue light.
