Design with Purpose: Navigating Design, Big Tech, and Volunteering
“I want to leave the world a better place by offering my skills.”
Graphic design is more than just aesthetics—it is a visual language designed to convey a message. For Mayte, a professional graphic designer, this discipline is omnipresent, spanning everything from logos and websites to advertisements on television and in print.
Currently, Mayte balances a dynamic professional life: working on internal marketing content at a Big Tech company, serving as a Diversity and Accessibility lead, and dedicating significant time to volunteering for Nova New Opportunities in London.
From Fashion to Design
Mayte's creative journey began in childhood with an early passion for fashion design. When the time came to pursue higher education, Mayte sought a path that combined this creative drive with practical employability. Although a specialised fashion school was not available, Mayte chose graphic design—a decision that has since proven to be a deeply rewarding professional cornerstone.
China and the Freelance Leap
Following university, Mayte's path took an unexpected turn toward language studies and a six-month adventure in China. Living with a Chinese family and connecting with people globally, Mayte eventually began freelancing in Shanghai. When the 2008 financial crisis hit, Mayte returned to Italy and pivoted into a 14-year career in product specialist and sales roles.
Design Roots and Volunteering
Today, Mayte integrates design expertise with a passion for social impact, specifically through volunteering. A central part of this commitment is volunteering for Nova New Opportunities, an organisation that provided personal support during difficult times. The design work Mayte contributes helps ensure they can continue their vital community programs—a dedication spanning eight years, including serving as creative leader for the TED Lab Growth project in 2019.
ADHD, Pressure, and Mindfulness
Reflecting on a recent ADHD diagnosis, Mayte identifies this as a key driver of a high-energy, creative, multi-faceted career. The ability to generate a myriad of ideas acts as a "superpower," but the associated challenges—mental exhaustion and the risk of burnout—are real. Routine automation, mindfulness, and organisation are the strategies Mayte relies on.
The Future of Design
When asked about the role of AI in design, Mayte remains optimistic but grounded. AI is an excellent tool for brainstorming and repetitive tasks, but it cannot replace the nuanced creativity and integrity of a human designer. For those starting out: maintain traditional handiwork, and volunteer—it's a powerful way to gain experience, upskill, and make a meaningful contribution to the world.
